Raffaella and Chris chose Mitchelton Estate in Nagambie after driving up the driveway and feeling they had found a quiet retreat for the whole weekend. There was no single deal-maker. It was the combination: nature, good food and wine, the art gallery, the bars and the hotel, all in one place.

That last part mattered even more once the wedding arrived. From the balcony of their room, Raffaella could see guests getting ready and enjoying the place they had chosen. Rather than everyone arriving only for the main event, there was a sense that the weekend had already begun around them.

Raffaella remembers the force of it, the surprise of it, and the fact that Johnny still caught some of the strongest images in that exact moment.

A sunset nobody was expecting

With an overcast sky overhead, Raffaella and Chris had been told not to expect a sunset. By that point, they had accepted it and had also enjoyed a drink or two — a reasonable response to a wedding day well underway.

Then the sun appeared.

Johnny whisked them away without apology while it was there. The timing was unexpected, the decision was quick, and Raffaella remembers the resulting moments as effortless and warm. It was not something they had planned around or waited anxiously for; it simply arrived, briefly, after everyone had stopped expecting it.

That is often the difference between a tightly controlled wedding and one people genuinely enjoy being part of. There is a plan, certainly, but there is also enough breathing room to say yes when an unexpected opportunity turns up.

Do it your way

Raffaella and Chris’s advice for other couples is to avoid overthinking it and to plan gradually, so that by the time the wedding comes around, the process has not taken over the experience.

More than that, they encourage couples to be selfish in the best sense of the word: stay in the bubble together, do what you want with your new husband or wife, and trust that everyone and everything else can flow around you.

For Raffaella and Chris, that meant a weekend of their own choosing — complete with a champagne mishap, a determined wind and a sunset that arrived only after it had been ruled out.
